Overview
Lost Legends MUD is a text-based multiplayer MUD written in C89, originally started in 1996 and still runs today. It can run on multiple platforms and is reachable via standard telnet/MUD clients.
My Role
Creator and sole maintainer.
Key Contributions
- Designed and implemented a full-stack multiplayer game server in C89: network loop, command parsing, world simulation, persistence.
- Maintained and evolved a large monolithic codebase from 1996 to the present while keeping the game live.
- Kept the code compiling and running across multiple platforms and changing compiler/toolchain generations.
- Implemented admin tools and live-ops workflows (reboots, hotfixes, content changes) without modern frameworks.
- Managed low-level networking and performance under strict resource constraints.
- Added tools to re-balance game levels and classes .
- Redesigned the entire game world, putting game scripting first.
Tech Stack
- C89
- Sockets / telnet text protocol
- Linux server (primary deployment)
- Makefiles / custom tooling
Why This Example Matters
- Demonstrates long-term ownership of a legacy C89 codebase and live service (1996–present).
- Shows ability to work inside large, old monoliths and safely extend/refactor them.
- Evidence of low-level systems and networking experience beyond managed runtimes.
- Reinforces that I can maintain and modernize legacy systems, not just build greenfield projects.
